Explore Historic Lincoln

Bursting with history and heritage and jam-packed with things to see and do, Lincoln is a great day out.

Located just over 30 minutes from our park, Lincoln is ranked among England’s best small cities… and it’s easy to see why.

It’s a town of two halves, with the Cathedral at its peak and Roman waterways below – and just about everything in between there is simply so much that’s waiting to be explored.

Tackle the famous Steep Hill and you will discover an array of independent shops, eye-catching buildings and photo-worthy moments. Head along the cobbled streets to Lincoln Cathedral, the Medieval Bishop’s Palace and Lincoln Castle. These incredible attractions boast some of the finest architecture in the country, and a whole host of secrets are hidden within their walls.

And, of course, we can’t talk about Lincoln without mentioning the shops! It’s the perfect place to exercise your credit card with big name brands and independents side by side. Plus, there’s an almost overwhelming offering of pubs, bars and cafes for ample refreshment!

As well as its outstanding natural beauty, The Lincolnshire Wolds is home to range of charming market towns and villages that are well worth exploring.

Here’s just a few of our favourites that are located a short distance from our park.

Market Rasen

Home to the county’s only racecourse (which in itself is a great day out!), Market Rasen is small picturesque town, centred around it market place. Home to cobbled streets and independent shops and cafes, it’s well worth a visit and close to our park.

Caistor

Located at the northern edge of the Wolds, Caistor is picturesque town that’s rich in history , dating back to Roman Times. There are no fewer than 56 listed buildings in the town centre. If you’re looking for a bite to eat or some shops to browse, Caistor is well worth a visit and is only a short distance from us.

Louth

Regarded as a bit of a foodie haven, Louth is the place for cafes, pubs restaurants and lots of independent shops, with over 70% of traders there being independently owned. It’s also easy on the eye, and you can spend time exploring the magnificent Georgian and Victorian architecture throughout the town centre.

Alford

This picturesque town sits at the foot of the Wolds and is famed for its architecture, quaint streets and thatched roof cottages. Alford is home to weekly outdoor markets and in the summer, arts and craft markets where you can buy everything from ceramics to chocolates.

Spilsby

What it lacks in size, Spilsby more than makes up for in charm! This pretty town home to stone cobbled streets, well-preserved 19th Century buildings and plenty of independent shops and places to eat and drink. Nearby is the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre which is well worth a visit.

Horncastle

Often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Wolds, Horncastle is steeped in history. Dating back to Roman times and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it is claimed to be owned by King William. It is also known well as hotspot for antiques and artisan shops as well as galleries and award-winning eateries.

Cleethorpes

One of the region’s most popular seaside towns, Cleethorpes is home to everything you would expect from a traditional seaside resort. From arcades and eateries to a beautiful beach and an iconic pier, there’s so much to enjoy here! It’s the perfect family day out with lots of popular attractions nearby including Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, Lincolnshire Llama Cleethorpes and Waltham Windmill to name but a few.

Mablethorpe

Boasting a magnificent blue flag beach, Mablethorpe is one of the region’s most popular coastal towns. It offers something for all ages with plenty of shops, cafes and bars as well as lots of attractions for adults and children alike. There’s even donkey rides on the beach and crazy golf to enjoy, too! Top attractions nearby include the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary & Wildlife Centre.

Sutton on Sea

Sutton-On-Sea is quintessential old fashioned seaside town boasting a beautifully clean beach for everyone to enjoy. It’s also home to attractive gardens and a children’s paddling pool.

If you’re looking for a coastal that’s a little less boisterous then Sutton on Sea is the place to go, with it being far quieter than Skegness and Mablethorpe.
